360° of South Georgia Island and the Falklands

I’m always looking for unique ways to capture images, and I’ve been very excited by VR. The Ricoh Theta S came out right before my trip to South Georgia, and mine arrived the day before I left (phew!). I wanted to share some of the video and stills I captured, trying to give you a good sense of the experience, like here at Salisbury Plain.

Here’s the link to my Theta page with all the stills. I’ve included embeds and short descriptions below. You can see all of the videos on my YouTube playlist in Chrome.

At St. Andrew’s Bay, this elephant seal weaner decided he wanted to climb on my camera bag and me. They’re very cute!

Grytviken provided some great 360 opportunities, starting with this penguin right by the landing site.

The museum and whaling artifacts were pretty neat, too.

The whaling stations have been cleaned up, but they’re a stain on our history.

Fortunately the wildlife is coming back, sometimes right where you want to walk!

Ernest Shackleton’s grave stands out in the cemetery.

And who doesn’t love a fur seal at Rosita Harbor?

We had an hour in Stanley, in the Falkland Islands, so I took a few shots there. Memories of the war are still prominent in people’s mind, and there’s a memorial right downtown.

The islanders are vehemently British, and it’s wild seeing the red telephone booths near the bottom of the earth.

The Christ Church Cathedral is quite iconic, too!
